Chronic stress reactions cause debilitating effects

All around us, there are stressors in our lives. We are all frequently assaulted by these stressors, but may not realize just how debilitating our chronic reactions to them can be on our minds, bodies and behaviours. Here are some symptoms to watch out for.

Physical symptoms

The most common physical symptoms that might arise from chronic-stress reactions in your life include:

  • Aches and pains
  • Diarrhea, constipation, bowel problems
  • Nausea, dizziness, vertigo
  • Migraine headaches, frequent colds or flu viruses
  • Chest pain, rapid heartbeat, heart pounding
  • Loss of sex drive

You may also experience mental, emotional and behavioural symptoms.

Mental Symptoms

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Trouble making decisions
  • Negative outlook on life
  • Anxious or racing thoughts
  • Constant worrying

Emotional Symptoms

  • General moodiness
  • Irritability or short temper
  • Agitation, anger and inability to relax
  • Feeling overwhelmed with life
  • Feeling lonely and isolated
  • Depression or general unhappiness

Behaviour Symptoms

  • Eating more or less
  • Sleeping too much/too little
  • Isolating yourself from others
  • Procrastinating or neglecting life’s responsibilities
  • Using alcohol, cigarettes or drugs
  • Nervous habits
